We had a reunion party after 3 months. We bought a copy of “Ready to lead” and gave it as a gift to each young person as it is written to accompany the course and to help reinforce the teaching they’d experienced.

We realised how important it was for every participant to be able to attend all the sessions so we sent them all the dates in advance and asked them to tick boxes saying they could make each date and we got their parents to sign the form too. That way hopefully the dates would be put in the family diary.

We made a charge of £10 per month or a one-off £80 for the each young person on the course. This not only helped cover the cost of running the course (especially the 24-hour away times) but also developed commitment to be at the course each month.

We met with each young person individually in the middle of the course to see how they were doing and where they were thinking of serving and leading. It was a great way not only to hear what God had been doing in them more specifically, but also to evaluate the course as well.

We set memory verses/reminders for each month so the young people would come to the next session without needing too much of a reminder.

We let the mentors have copies of all the handout sheets so that they could see the questions which could be discussed during the mentor sessions.

The mentors were all approved by church staff as well so we were assured we could trust that their perspective would be good for the church and for the young people.

As part of our child protection policy, we required each mentor to let the Youth Pastor know when and where they would be meeting up each month with their mentee. This not only protected them, but also meant that it was easy to chase up mentor pairs who hadn’t met for a while.

We gave each person a matching folder and journal notebook. This gave the impression that this was an important course and they should take it seriously. It worked a treat!

For the 24hour away times, we found it cheaper to go self-catering but we realised we needed to either take someone along who would cook for us, or to take meals already prepared which could be re-heated as it was too much for the leaders to both run the course and organise the cooking.

'The Krypton Factor' – to make it more challenging, we had them in teams and they took it in turns to find a piece and fit it in the right hole, while being blindfolded!

We gave each participant a plant pot and a packet of seeds as a welcome gift! We then used it to illustrate that they’re useless unless the seeds are planted and nurtured. We made the link to the leadership gifts they have are useless unless they are nurtured and used.
