Mentoring young leaders really does have the potential to change a generation and renew leadership in both the church and the nation. Waiting until people are in their 20s and 30s to start mentoring and training them in leadership is just too late.
Because mentoring is an essential part of the Growing Leaders – Youth Edition course, CPAS has also teamed up with Sophia Network and Urban Saints to deliver a series of mentoring training days for all those involved in working with children, young people and adults.
A vital part of the course is a commitment to provide each young person with a mentor. This is an adult who can meet with them once each month for the duration of the course.
These meetings help the participant think and talk through the learning they are receiving and start to apply it in their own leadership situation. Each session includes some suggestions as to what might be helpful to discuss.
Included in the course pack is a whole section on mentoring which covers what mentoring is and how to select mentors. There is also a guide to give to new mentors, which includes tips and advice on how to be a mentor and a helpful review sheet which mentors can complete to keep a record of their meetings.
The book Growing Young Leaders, by Ruth Hassall, provides further advice and guidance for those mentoring teenagers.
