'So often we hear reports on how many young people are leaving the church each week and the negative impact that this has on the future of the church. While numbers of young people leaving are high and a real concern, it is a heart-warming experience to meet young people who are travelling in the opposite direction - committed to church and exploring for themselves the call that the Lord has placed on their lives.
'Last week I visited a group of young people from a cluster of churches, who are meeting together each week to share food, have fun and explore what it means to be a Christian leader in all elements of life - be that at home, with friends, at school, college or university and in the church.
'The young people, along with their youth worker and another helper from church, are working their way through the Growing Leaders - Youth Edition course. They have been on the course for three months so far - out of eight - and have explored 'Leadership Matters', 'Remember who and whose you are' and 'Getting to the heart.'
'As I spent the evening with them I saw how interactive the course material allowed them to be. The evening was a balanced mix of information, scripture, discussion, interaction and creativity, with plenty of debate, laughter, enthusiasm and thoughtful response!
'Whilst it is valid, and needed, to focus on the wavering numbers of young people at church and what we can be doing to help reach out to young people, it is equally important that we are investing in the young people that we do have.
