Send your potential participants a formal invite to join the course. There is a template for one in the Resource section of this website.

Give all your participants a Growing Leaders certificate at the end of the course to symbolise what they have acheived. There is a template for one in teh Resource section of this website.

We bought each participant a lever folder, with the sort of cover in which you can slide a piece of A4 paper as a front cover, then colour-printed off the A4 poster from the CD-ROM disk and then overprinted each candidate's name. This made the folders look amazingly professional and personalised. Stops them getting mixed up too.

Make use of the Discerning Direction Introductory Liturgy PowerPoint provided in the Resource section of this website.

For the worship in session 5 of GL, I wanted to do the suggested worship idea of getting people to surrender compasses as a symbolic act, but thought that people might not own one or forget to bring one, so with an image search on the internet I created this file, printed onto card and cut up so that each person could choose a compass when they arrive for use in the worship slot later on. They are all different and we get them back to use again next year.

When we came at the end of the day to 'celebrate it', we gave each participant a balloon to blow up, and asked them to write on something that had actually happened in their work as a result of some vision or sense of direction. We then spent five (manic) minutes keeping the balloons in the air as long as possible. A good point at which to let off steam, do something physical, and realise that discerning direction does lead to things happening.

When you come to slide 76 and the point 'celebrate', play Kool and the Gang's song 'Celebration' as a lively way of introducing the point. The song is available as a download from a number of MP3 sites, and is ideally played LOUD!
  • GL Session 10 – Continuing well

How about starting this session with a meal as a way of celebrating their time together as a group? Also give a gift of a group photo in a frame to each person, linking this with the notion that leadership is never in isolation but in community. Encourage people to use it as a prompt to keep praying for one another.
