Building a Shared Theology for Spiritual Development.
An interactive opportunity to explore the overlap and tensions between spiritual development and Christian discipleship in CofE schools.
Church schools are called to nurture the spiritual development of every child while being rooted in a distinctly Christian vision. Yet how does spiritual development relate to Christian discipleship? Where do these concepts overlap, where do they differ, and what does this mean for schools and churches working in partnership?
This interactive online session brings together clergy and school leaders to explore these questions in a spirit of curiosity, generosity and shared learning. Through discussion, case studies and reflection, participants will have the opportunity to examine some of the assumptions, aspirations and tensions that sit beneath our work with children and young people.
Together we will consider:
- What do we mean by spiritual development and Christian discipleship?
- What outcomes are we hoping for in children and young people?
- How can Church schools remain confidently Christian while welcoming those of other faiths and none?
- What does it mean for pupils, families and staff to be "present with integrity"?
- How might schools and churches work together when children show deeper spiritual curiosity or interest in faith?
- What are the opportunities and boundaries of school–church partnership?
The session is designed to be reflective, practical and participative, creating space for diverse perspectives and honest conversation. Whether you lead a school, serve in a parish, or support Church school governance, you are warmly invited to join the discussion.
