Aims

Provide school and church leaders with:

  • A termly opportunity for rich partnership conversations.
  • Facilitation to support dialogue around more challenging topics.
  • Training in areas of mutual interest and benefit.
  • Space to review and adapt your shared action plan.

What Is It and Who Is It For?

This course is for both school and church leaders to attend so that the pupils of their community can best access progressively deeper opportunities to explore the Christian faith.

Applicable across the theological traditions, across the range of schools (age, foundation, size) and between all types of leaders from those who already relate strongly through to those who have some barriers to overcome.

The course comprises of six sessions hosted over two years (i.e. one per term). Although each session is designed to stand-alone (in order to withstand circumstances where a session is missed or where there is a leadership change mid cycle), the maximum impact will be felt where course participants jointly attend all 6 sessions with their counterpart.

Each session is 1.5hrs, but the final 30mins is a discussion with your local team – this need not be done online.

Cost: £40 per school/church partnership (bring as many attendees as you like).

Training Overview

Session 1: Barriers to effective partnership

  • How can you analyse the efficacy of your partnership?
    • Common barriers – and creative solutions

Session 2: Pupil Spiritual Development

  • What is this?
  • How is it similar to but distinct from Christian spiritual development?
  • Where can you see ’progressively deeper opportunities’ for your community Vs where is the pathway patchy?
  • Places to work smarter not harder

Session 3: Power of Questions

  • The power of genuine curiosity and finding the right question
  • User pathways: what is the experience of spiritual development like for different members of the community?

Session 4: Genuine Vs False Agency

  • Critique models of spiritual encounters.

Examine the use of Chrisitan disciplines within both school and church and consider:

  • Where are pupils active agents Vs passive recipients?
  • What can be done to increase agency?
  • What does this look like at home/outside of school and church?

Session 5: Drawing in support from home

Acknowledge:

  • Both school and church struggle with lack of volunteers.
  • Pupils who are supported by home/an interested adult do better with (a) educative outcomes and (b) spiritual development/faith formation.
  • Input into maximising number and impact of volunteers.

Session 6: Holding Difference Well

  • Look at Eastern Vs Western theology and how this underpins differing approaches to sitting with difference.
  • Examine models for holding difference well and work through a toolkit for disagreeing well.
  • Consider areas of possible tension/difference.

Is There Any Reason Why We Shouldn’t Do It? No. However, the course is designed around the clergy person and headteacher both being present.

Can you help me to invite my counterpart/other parish partners? Yes – download this information as a flyer here.
